Inside Beijing | 融入北京

For slow connections watch the webdocumentary here, or contact us for an offline version.

This webdoc was conceived as the open element of the project: fluid, as ever-transforming as Beijing, the city under permanent construction it wants to tell about.
Starting from the basic grid, many pieces can be added – new links and interactions – to make up a patchwork as complex as the contemporary Chinese culture.
It is also open towards an interested audience, invited to join the debate through remarks, reflections and criticism.
Initially co-produced by Peacereporter/E il mensile, after their closedown, this webdoc is released for the first time in July 2012 as an independent work.
The authors are engaged to keep working on this project and will consider any co-production, contribution and financial offer.

THE PROJECT

Inside Beijing is a multimedia project covering the political and cultural capital of China. A diary describing Beijing through words, images, sounds and noises. It focuses mainly on two aspects connected to each other: the urban development of the metropolis and the evolution of the Chinese culture. What ideas lie at the heart of the city’s various places? Why, for example, Beijing boasts a gigantic square but has no public spaces? What kind of connection exists between the official and the popular culture emanating from the underbelly of the city?

Inside Beijing is also meant to be a tribute to Beijing, a city which can be either fascinating or unbearable, but it never leaves you indifferent.

In October 2011 Chinese authorities launched a new slogan: cultural development. The key of the project is supposed to be the export of ideas and contents made in China around the globe to build up soft power. It’s a long-term project. Those who, being both a foreigner and a journalist in Beijing at that time, are provided with a chance to make an investigation: what has China to offer the world? This research focuses on places and on how they change, because in the transformation of cities it is already possible to get a glimpse of the answer to the question ““what does constitute the Chinese culture today?”. Some answers can be found in the ancient – though, sometimes, submerged – Chinese tradition. Others are a reflection of fast modernization.

The point of observation will be the bicycle, a traditional vehicle which nowadays has to trail along and zigzag among the heavy traffic. By biking one sees Beijing in a personal way.

In March 2012 Inside Beijing became a videoinstallation during the Festival of African, Asian and Latin American Film in Milan. In may the monthly publication “E” published this reportage. The documentary is a continuous work in progress, like a blackboard on which someone constantly draws new scenes and new stories which also have a linear version in the documentary.
